I have high speed broadband but I have never had even half of 8000kbps and wonder what it could possibly be like. Since being moved to Tiscali it has been even worse than previously.  I have 39 tests on speedtest.net and the fastest download was a oncer, an exceptionally racy 2922kbs.  It gives an average download speed of 1206kbs.  The slowest was 111kbs.  This is tonight's effort:

8/22/2007 10:28 PM GMT    1132 kb/s    521 kb/s    144 ms    London    ~ 200 mi
8/22/2007 10:24 PM GMT    1290 kb/s    516 kb/s    405 ms    London    ~ 200 mi
8/22/2007 10:22 PM GMT    1069 kb/s    512 kb/s    195 ms    London    ~ 200 mi
8/22/2007 10:14 PM GMT    1102 kb/s    514 kb/s    195 ms    London    ~ 200 mi
8/22/2007 12:08 AM GMT    2459 kb/s    531 kb/s    155 ms    London    ~ 200 mi
8/22/2007 12:05 AM GMT    2107 kb/s    512 kb/s    249 ms    Maidenhead    ~ 150 mi
8/21/2007 11:59 PM GMT    1496 kb/s    483 kb/s    398 ms    London    ~ 200 m

I realize I would be optimistic thinking 8000kbps might be nice but surely it isn't unrealistic to expect a better speed.

An ongoing saga this one and not any real solutions at the moment.

Sounds a bit suspect. I gather your stable rate is set at 8000, so that (at least ;p) is one avenue closed off.

Might be worth a tracert or two to see if there's particular sticking point somewhere. Try tracert portal.plus.net and see what you get.

It's the PlusNet Way

Does your router have a habit of nodding off? 201ms for the first of the probes is rather tardy.

You mentioned a long running saga, so anything suggested here could be repeats of what has already been done - does that bother you?

A few basics to start with:

Can you post your router stats (sync speeds, noise margin attenuation)

Have you tried tweaking MTU and RWIN? Is your router MTU the same or larger than your PC MTU?

Are you using a wired or wireless connection?

What are your speeds like at off peak times (e.g. around breakfast time)?

Hi

It's also worth noting that 8000k isn't ever going to be achieved on a 8Mbit/sec ADSL line as there are overheads, so the maximum you could get if everything was optimised completely with no contention is around 7100-7200k.

I'm on LLU Tiscali and no matter what time of day or night will get around 6800-6900k.

A wireless connection will also slow your speed down, always test with a wired ethernet connection to the router to get a less clouded picture.

Many thanks for your replies and suggestions.

The router is wired.  MTU 1458 and the PC MTU is 1430.

From Statistics:

ADSL Link     Downstream     Upstream
Connection Speed    7981 kbps    639 kbps
Line Attenuation    24 db    6 db
Noise Margin    20 db    13 db

I think it worth mentioning that pre-LLU I was getting 6000+

Try running http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and see what it recommends. (It will give you a URL for the results which you can post back here)

Hi

Have you raised this as a fault with PlusNet?  You should be getting speeds higher than that with the sync you have I would have thought.  What exchange are you connected to?  Maybe it's just normal throttling on the PlusNet network?

I have raised this as a fault with PlusNet.  Am connected to the Nuneaton exchange.
