Title: New product launch today
Post by: mbeckett on September 19, 2007, 09:00:07 am
Morning all,

Some of you may have noticed us hinting towards a new product launch lately, and we're pleased to announce the launch of Broadband Your Way Pro today.

BBYW Pro gives you 10GB of usage per month, all prioritised, with free overnight usage.

You get all the usual extra's, including webspace and VoIP minutes.

Regrades from existing products to the new one are free. :)

You can find more information about the new product here. (http://www.plus.net/residential/broadband/bbyw_pro.shtml?WT.svl=bbywpro_ban)

Are you sure that's right? The link you gave says that all gaming and VOIP traffic is prioritised, but not necessarily the full 10 GB.

Absolutely.

We have 4 traffic priority levels. Broadband Your Way Pro differs from our other products in that all traffic is in the top 2 levels.

Titanium - This is the highest priority on our network. Gaming and VoIP traffic is in this level.
Gold - All other Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in our gold level.
Silver - No Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in this level.
Bronze - No Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in this level

Since my post hasn't been responded to on the main forums I will repeat it here
Quote
Free overnight usage
Usage between midnight-8am doesn't count towards your usage allowance. That means you can stay up all night playing games across time zones without using your allowance. You can also schedule patch downloads for these hours.

Titanium - This is the highest priority on our network. Gaming and VoIP traffic is in this level.
Gold - All other Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in our gold level.
Silver - No Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in this level.
Bronze - No Broadband Your Way Pro traffic is in this level.
Putting these two together does this mean that all the free overnight usage is gold hence giving this product an immediate advantage over all other products for P2P for example. Also where do the old PAYG products fit into this.

Isn't there still an overall overnight rate limit (higher than daytime) for P2P? If so the users on these accounts could hog the lot which wouldn't be popular with everyone else attempting to schedule their P2P!

Isn't the principle that if they do hog the bandwidth their 10GB will rapidly be used up.  Then it costs more (and more ) which should pay for the extra capacity needed (assuming PN have got their sums right)?

we are discussing the free overnight period so the 10GB allowance is not relevant

According to this http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/speed.shtml the overnight traffic is not restricted but comes under the overall prioritisation rules hence gold is better than silver and 100 users with 6,000 kbps speeds could in theory saturate a 622 Mb/s central
The information for traffic prioritisation by type is given here http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/traffic_prioritisation.shtml and clearly gives the Pro users an immediate advantage.
Also Ian Wild has stated over on TBB

Pro isn't just a gaming product however - That's just where the initial marketing got aimed. Behind the scenes it's very similar to our older PAYG products, which have all traffic in Gold or Platinum already
this tends to imply that there is a predefined limit to gold traffic and hence everything else in the gold band will suffer unless there are various qualities of gold (21 carat, 12 carat and iron pyrites)with P2P being the lowest.

Lol - More queues won't do!

Free Overnight, between 12 and 2, you are right, people on Pro will get better 'free' performance. After about then, the network isn't full anyway so there isn't going to be any noticeable difference.

Does that answer what you were asking?

Ian

Ian,
I am not sure that it does - looking at the bandwidth usage graph (copy attached) the only reason why the network isn't at full capacity is that P2P has a total capacity restriction. If that global restriction is still there then the Pro and PAYG users could take the bulk of the capacity by the fact that their part is classified as gold whereas the other products has it as silver.

Hi,

Just to clarify, all BBYW Pro traffic is in Gold at all times, with the exception of VoIP and Gaming, which is Titanium.

TBH the current PAYG users (of which there are a fair few) have almost the same off peak profiling, and don't impact other users much (it's been a while since we had complaints about poor performance off peak so there can't be too much of an issue).

Obviously we'll be keeping an eye on this. ;)

To help users make decisions, PUG has updated the product comparison table Here (http://usergroup.plus.net/070920_bbywcomp3.php) to include BBYW Pro
