Still getting "an empty window", odd that it works for you, but maybe your set-up is more sophisticated.
lol
I tested it on an old Eee netbook - the only machine that had Windows 7 on it. It uses Avast, so sophistication isn't quite the word I'd use Tongue
The only other thing that crossed my mind was whether you had javascript turned off or blocked, but I'd imagine more things would be an issue than just the icon popup if that were the case.

... as to javascript, I've no idea whether it's enabled or not (and no idea where to look to check that, either : | ) but wouldn't that affect Firefox equally, given both are on the same PC (?)

@Penny,

If you visit https://www.whatismybrowser.com/is-javascript-enabled it will tell you (on the first few lines) if JavaScript is enabled in your browser. I think the on/off setting can be different in each browser.

thank you : )

... and yes, it is enabled.

in both IE11 and FF 32.0.3.

Intrigued, now : )

Just looked at "inspect element" on each page, both have <a href="javascript:moreSmileys();">[more]</a>
but the [more] doesn't display in the FF visible element-text except if I copy-and-paste it here.

Right-clicking the '[more]' visible-text-on-the-page and selecting 'properties' for IE gives:
Protocol - Unknown Protocol;  Type - Not Available;  Address URL - javascript:moreSmileys();
... FF doesn't have a 'properties' option on right-click.

As you're aware I don't know the first thing about javascript : )  is the factor "unknown protocol" somehow relevant?  I went looking for unknown protocol javascript on Google - there are a lot of related posts but nothing I understood, particularly : /

Another thought is that the javascript generates a popup window - perhaps AVG or something else is blocking popups (or their content, at least)?

... perhaps surprisingly, the pop-up factor did actually occur to me, before, so I went looking and discovered usergroup.plus.net wasn't specifically on my list of "allowed" sites.
... though logically if a blank pop-up was appearing I didn't understand why just its content should be missing.

Anyway I added 'usergroup.plus.net' (it wouldn't accept a separate 'usergroup.plus.net/forum' but I assume that's because the former permits anything within the whole of usergroup.plus.net).

It didn't make a scrap of difference : /  still an empty window.  I don't think I can hang this one on AVG Free (has never caused any issues whatsoever in the past).

graphics lol from http://usergroup.plus.net/forum/Smileys/kitzemotes/lol.gif

from "more" - http://usergroup.plus.net/forum/Smileys/kitzemotes/congrats.gif

I can see the congrats graphic "separately" in IE11 (ie if called up directly) - struggling a bit now to understand why I wouldn't be able to see it (or anything else) in the pop-up window on IE11.

Having said that, I can't now see 'congrats' in FF, either, neither on the standard bar above where the post text goes, nor in the 'more' pop-up window : /

I give up - it doesn't matter - lol   this is clearly just not meant to be : /

Hi Penny,

I've no idea whether the following suggestion is relevant since it's related to a question on getting blank tabs. But changing this setting fixed that user's problem.

I went to Tool, internet options, advanced, and under security clicked Enable Enhanced Protection Mode.

lol

... as a footnote, "recent posts" seems to be working perfectly again as well.

Everything has ended up rather better than expected : D
