What broadband settings - are you using a USB modem

Jim PlusNet PAYG RIN (no longer)
Now changed to BBYW Option 2 and seeing what difference it makes
Wish I had changed earlier as I have seen very little difference

Hi

Three questions:-

Question 1:
Do you use a Router (via network lead or wireless) or a USB Modem to connect to the Internet?
If you use a router to connect to the internet (most connections do these days), then that box handles all the internet connection to broadband for you, (so move to question 2 now).

If you use an older style USB modem, will you need to re-install the broadband modem drivers & settings themselves to your computer, possibly using the original CD that came with the modem. Once you have this sorted your USB modem drivers & settings, you will skip question 2, and jump straight to question 3.

(Note: Some one port routers, have both a network port, and a USB port. These are still classed as routers rather then USB modems. In this case, regardless of whether USB is currently used on the old computer, I highly recommend connecting the new computer using the network lead rather than USB, as then no drivers will be required).

If you are unsure whether you have a router or a USB modem, then reply with the make & model number from your broadband router/modem device (eg Thomson 585v7) and someone will tell you which you have.

Question 2:
Do you connect to the router via a Wire or Wireless?
If using a wire, you should just plug it in, and the internet will work (do that, then move on to the next question). If using wireless, you will need to know your wireless setting. These will probably be with your router documents, or will have been changed by you when you first set it up. If you need help with this, then ask before moving to the next question). You should now have internet access on the new computer before moving to the final question.

Question 3:
How do you check your emails? Do you use webmail? Or a program like Outlook Express, Outlook, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Entourage etc?
If using Webmail, you need to change nothing, just login as normal on the new computer, as all your emails & addresses are stored on the internet itself... you probably have everything sorted. Sit back and enjoy your new computer!

If you use an email program on the old computer, you will need to move your email store, address book & email settings from the old computer to the new one, so that you will be able to use your email accounts as before. The methods for doing this vary from program to program, so if you reply here, saying which program you use, then someone will hopefully be able to help you to migrate those items to the new computer.

If you are unsure of any step, just post back with the answers to the main three questions, and someone will advise further.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Thanks for the replies.

Mike, I have a router, BT Voyager 2110, which is only connected to my own computer, and I use Thunderbird for my emails. I hope this answers your three questions.

Hi Roy,

If you connect to your Voyager modem by an ethernet cable, your new computer should automatically detect the settings and then just be able to access the internet as your previous one did.

Kind Regards,

Roy,

As James says:

If you use a network cable to connect your computer to the router, you will just need to plug it in to the new computer, and the internet should work on the new computer just as before.

If you want to use wireless:
Use the following 6 steps (stop before it talks about "connecting to the internet" and beyond, as this was already done the first time you setup the router years ago):
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/hardware/voyager2110.shtml#wireless

NOTE: If you changed the network name (SSID) or Wireless Key (PSK) when you setup the router the first time, then you will need to use the new values you chose rather than those on the stickers underneath the router.

To migrate thunderbird settings, emails & addressbook, you might need help from someone else (as I don't use Thunderbird).
I found this thread, with links to various other support docs, but I don't know if it accurately describes the process:
