Community Site?  Discuss (dot) Plus (dot) net?  What do you think?

We've just started the development phase for our new 'community' site - and we want your help!

1)  Prototyped Design
Over the last few days our designers have worked on a number of designs and seem to have settled on the following.  We think it looks quite good - but what do you think?

http://comms.plus.net/liam/community_prototype.jpg

2)  The Name
What shall we call it?  We have varying opinions as to what we think the site should be called, so we would like your help in coming to a final decision.  Afterall, it is your site!

I've setup a Zoomerang survey to collate opinions and we'll announce the winning name early next week as the site enters the build phase.  Help us out here : http://www.plus.net/go.html/community_site_vote

We hope to roll the website to beta in early April and will be looking for volunteers to help us try it out.  More information on that soon!

Cheers,
Liam

Like the look of it Smiley

... but where's MetroNet on the logos?  Noticed it was absent from the Zoomerang survey, first, and then that it was also missing from the prototype site design.

The other thought that occurred, was that there might be more of an overall "community" feel if you enable customers to post up their (family-friendly) website as a link (within pre-defined sections) - would mean customers would have a wider overview of sites hosted on the PN-family servers and would build bonds at other levels.

I know there's a "best of the web" link but it's not quite the same thing.

Regards,

Penny.

Yep.  Some kind of community bookmarking feature is something we're looking at.

The absence of the Metronet logo in the prototype is purely an oversight and because it's a new prototype by one of our newbie designers smiley

The absence of the Metronet logo in the survey is because it's already been uploaded to Zoomerang for the customer sat surveys.  Nothing more sinister - promise!

Didn't imagine it was deliberate Wink

Just clicked on the Zoomerang survey and it says ....

*What do you think we should call our new 'Community' site?
   together
   community
   life
   discuss
   chat
   interact
   people
   explore
   inside

Gosh guys, is that it?  Didn't explore to see if there were further pages as that would probably have required opting for one of the above.

Howzabout "Apex"?

apex
- the highest point (of something); "at the peak of the pyramid" - Princeton UV wordnet
- the highest point of the radius at the top of a flat-arch or true-arch door or window (Architectural Traditions)
- the point of greatest activity (Mercksource - anatomical nomenclature)

The apex is where everything meets - the pyramid reference seemed appropriate because there are four vISPs and the Great Pyramid has four sides - line drawing of a pyramid of a slightly unusual sort here shows the four sides (only line drawing I could find).

Other people may well have more ideas/suggestions for a name, or are we stuck with one of the nine on the Zoomerang survey?

Regards,

Penny.

I'd go with either Apex or Community Wink, and the new design looks cool

I must admit to being a bit confused though. Is the new site to replace PUG?, if not, what is it's intended purpose?, how will it differ from PUG and the PN forums?

Its designed to replace the official pn/f9/fol/mn portal forums and is totally seperate to PUG.

I see from the F9 portal that there's a similar announcement and "cast your vote here" .... so presumably the range of names is effectively done-and-dusted as the same data will probably be on all the portals and the linked Zoomerang page from all the announcements will give the same 9 options.

Pity.  Might have been good if customers had been asked to come up with their own range of possibilities - difficult to coordinate now given that few if any of us read all four portals plus PUG.  Always assuming that expanding the range would be permitted, in any case Sad

I'd just like to have seen something a bit "different" - PlusNet, Force 9, FreeOnline and MetroNet all have a certain ring to them, whereas the "offered range" of names just seems a bit bland (sorry Liam, and no doubt the list was put together after a consensus of views from all the PN staff).

FWIW my "preferred nine" would be:

Quote
convergence

PlusNet Central

Plus Cafe

customer central

200,000

PlusNet Lounge

Five Ways                             (4 vISPs plus the PN crew)

meeting point

Apex

.... but I guess further suggestions really aren't going anywhere because it won't be practicable to re-start the whole process.  Might have been interesting to see what the userbase as a whole would have suggested, though.

Penny.

Penny

We also plan to use the name as part of the Web Address for accessing the sites - such that you'll get (for example) http://discuss.plus.net, http://discuss.f9.net.uk, http://discuss.free-online.net and http://discuss.metronet.co.uk which is why all the ones in our Survey are one word things.

I'm sure if there's a good idea suggested in the forums, we can certainly look at using it.

Yes I'd figured that might have a bearing, but to the customer clicking on a link, it's probably academic how the underlying html is worded - so "Discussion Zone" could still have the http://discuss.plus.net link, or whatever, regardless.

I'm sure if there's a good idea suggested in the forums, we can certainly look at using it.

Well all well and good, but then ideally there might perhaps be a call for suggestions wherever the announcement has been made, just so all customers are potentially aware that they could come up with a name.  Unless the Zoomerang thing was modified slightly to say

Quote
*What do you think we should call our new 'Community' site? (or suggest your own)
xxx (the 9 options)
blank box (your suggestion here)

... then maybe a second vote across all vISP and PUG forums, on an expanded range of possible names.

However given Liam's comment

and that we're already at the weekend, a bit doubtful as to how this could be arranged logistically within the timescale.

We've managed to schedule some Rapid Development time internally as we hope to have the community site to beta in just around a month's time.  Internally we had a list of about 20-30 which we whittled down to 10, and then down to this number shortly after.  It's not practical to have a vote for upto 30 options in the community, and there isn't enough time for a lengthly debate about other suggestions.

This, I think, is a happy medium.

I'm sure if there's a good idea suggested in the forums, we can certainly look at using it.

Crumbs, if "apex" isn't already a good idea - wish I had thought of that myself - I don't know what is.

Penny clearly has had a number of ideas and most seem as good as, if not better than, the various ones which PN (and PUG?) came up with.  I can fully understand the wish for a single word to match a subdomain that could be used, but unless it's deliberate to hide from the world, you could use forum.xxxxxxx  or make sure that www.xxxxxxxxx/forum/ goes to the right place.

The limited willingness to have any alternatives submitted before this stage is poor.
The decision to have a single word seems to have been made.
The plan to have a winning name next week is bad.

I could have put it more forcefully, but it looks like a "done deal" with a limited set of choices, limited period for discussion/voting, and similarities to a previous Zoomerang vote.

You've had the Community forum on the cards for months.  At this stage it seems daft to open up voting for a name when it could have been done weeks ago.   Not a criticism of you Liam, as you're just the messenger, but it's not worth putting to the vote if user ideas have been made near impossible to consider.  Maybe the other way around would have led to "impossible expectation" that you asked for a name but had no ETA for the forum, and was felt a worse way to do it, but as things stand this method seems like a Private Members Bill...  such a small amount of time allowed, it cannot be taken seriously...  Sorry.
