Oh deary me...looks like the Plusnet capacity model has reached its' limit...time for another 155mb segment perhaps? I know that it's not a hug number of packets, however it is the first time I can remember seeing Titanium queues being dropped - surely this signifies either a capacity problem or a config issue?

Hmm... looking at that graph, some of the drops look to be well outside peak time too.

No doubt we will shortly be told that there is "a problem with the graphs"... The truth is that both user knowledge and user experience demonstrate that PN is short on capacity. Light up some segments, darn it!

Earlier on this evening a maintenance was done to fix a problem with sessions dropping randomly. The problem was caused by the LCP Keepalive packets (the packets that keep the tunnels between us and you up). The cause of the problem was that the LCP keepalive packets were in the wrong q so were being dropped along with other traffic. The quickest and easiest fix was to move the q's around so that the right Q, ie. Titanium was being used for the LCP packets. The side effect of this work is that all the graphing data before this work became inaccurate. So although it looks like Titanium was dropping, it was not, What is showing as Titanium was in fact gold (I know that is a problem in and of itself). The data on the graph is only an accurate reflection after about 18:30.
There was a service status written to go out to warn people of this fact but I can't find it so maybe it didn't get sent. I will pick that one up in the morning.

The graphs were definitely incorrect following the work last night, but we are not for one second saying there isn't a problem somewhere - In fact, that is exactly what we are saying!
We have absolutely nothing we are trying to hide here - Yes, the platform is loaded, and under CBC with the current wholesale pricing environment (Which hasn't seen a price cut for over two years) that will always be the case. We have always designed our products in the same way - We take the amount you pay, spend the fixed costs on rental and overheads, and reserve a fixed percentage of money for bandwidth. We then provision the amount of bandwidth that all of our customers pay for, and do our best to split that up fairly. Obviously as usage increases generally, that means the overall bandwidth budget doesn't go as far, but that doesn't explain the current issue that people are reporting.
Three weeks ago, we didn't have the problems being reported today, and since then usage by customers has not increased particularly, so it's blatant there is a problem somewhere on the platform. We are doing everything we can to solve that, and Simon will hopefully get his announcement out today that details exactly what we are doing here.

You forgot to add that as the number of users goes down you've got less money to spend on bandwidth. |

I understand what youre saying and thanks for posting.
However from the customers perspective you have to realise that whats been happening over the past few days isnt acceptable and therefore people will get annoyed and fed up.
From this side of the fence it would seem that the roll out of ellacoya 6.4 has made things worse, and customers are going to start wondering why you simply cant roll back.

TBH I think it needs more than that 155Mb would be swallowed immediately.
155 is only sufficient for about 20 people maxing out.
A full 622 would give a lot more leaway - but they say its unjustified because of the cost.
Fair enough that there is only x amount of profit in each account, but when premier and business users start seeing account performance more like expected on BB+ then something is wrong. There is only so much you can squeeze and there comes a time when you have to increase capacity.

Kitz, thanks and apologies if I came across as short tempered. I do understand the frustration which is why I have written a first draft of a post to go out about the issues on the Broadband platform currently. I have a meeting at 14:30 to review and it'll hopefully go out today. |
