I think you'd better be asking for your money back from Sun for the nice new bits of kit which you have just got then, and put a note about them on your internal accounting system so as they can be avoided as a supplier in future...?

Sun? Avoid Sun? I don't think so Fendland. We are very keen for their kit right now, they are producing some very nice kit, with low power / space / price. Stuff that fits with our needs as a business. That is not to say that they always have the right kit for us, but they will certainly be considered as an option.

It would be like not using Cisco, just because we had dropped one of our new 7609 core routers...

OK, so my point might have been a bit one-size-fits-all and not really as fine tuned as it could have been, and I agree that dropping Sun might not be the answer, but doesn't it seem to you that you've purchased (hired/rented/leased/got) a bit of their kit, which has had a problem (maybe caused by a user of it, but that's not the point) and Sun really haven't been able to support you on the matter, and have pretty much washed their hands of it. That doesn't seem very good to me.

It *seems* that PlusNet have just accepted Sun's attitude to it, and done nothing about it. Why?! What happens when these new bits of kit come up with some other problem in x months time, and Sun hasn't got a clue, and us customers are left sitting here with a major problem?

Sun are a major supplier of enterprise hardware and software...and they most certainly have a clue. The core systems of much of the UK financial sector runs on Sun hardware and Solaris. Sun powered the majority of the dotcom boom (for very good reasons.) When that bubble burst, Sun were the only major enterprise player to increase R&D spending. Sun's Spectrum support offerings are extremely well formulated - our core systems have a 4hr SLA 24/7 (we could actually pay Sun more to better that.)

The problem is, the engineer deleted the volume, then tried to recreate the volume, trashing the filesystem in the process.

Not exactly Sun's fault... is it?

Sun have worked very closely with us on the problem that exisited before the volume was deleted (slow mail collection), they had engineers on the phone whenever we wanted them and provided on site support for firmware upgrade. They are continuing to support us as we move forward with the new mail platform implementation. However to expect them to turn back the clock and npuress that delete button is a touch unreasonable.

Speakling of the mail platform implentation, the timelines have slipped, mostly because of the telehouse power issue last week, as well as some further upgrades we want to do to the firmware and software as a result of the early testing we have done. I will post back in this thread with some more dates later today (hopefully)

After succesfful load testing of the new platform, we have been moving mail. This is where we are up to so far:

Free-Online: completed with 40Gb of mail moved
Charitydays: completed with 5 Gb of mail moved
Force9: A-B completed, C in progress.
        T-Z completed
        60 Gb of mail moved

We are closely monitoring the performance of the new platform and have seen no decrease in performance. I'll update with more info when I have it.

I am currently the engineer doing the move of the mail. So far what we have seen is that the move is having no negative impact on performance. Mean while the size of our mail queue, and POP3/IMAP responce times, seem to be staying consistant with the weekend utilisation. As weekends are our most quite time for email, this means that the storage is performing as expected, if not better.

The mail migration is progressing nicely. Force9 is somwhere between 70% - 80% done. The performance of the system is still rock solid with little variation between the old and new platforms. Plusnet mail is next, probably start that tomorrow all being well.
